Boston, MA Shawmut Design and Construction broke ground on a 41,900 s/f expansion and 53,100 s/f renovation of Boston University’s Goldman School of Dental Medicine, located at 100 E. Newton St.

In partnership with the university’s facilities and real estate planners, project manager Compass Project Management, and architect SmithGroupJJR, the team developed a phased renovation and expansion plan that will optimize use of the classroom and patient treatment spaces by the dental school during construction. The expansion will include office, instructional, clinical, and student collaborative spaces on seven existing levels, plus support spaces, and an entirely new 140-seat auditorium on the first floor. The interior renovation of the existing structure will reconfigure the layout of the patient and student/faculty entry, and clinical, classroom, and student spaces. Work on the building will continue without any interruption to classes.

When completed, the construction will transform the building’s exterior, creating a new façade that will not only allow more light into the building, but also fit well into the aesthetic of its medical campus neighborhoods. The renovated and expanded building will increase clinical space by more than 60%, making treatment environments more comfortable and flexible. The completed project will also offer students, residents, and patients areas to gather, reflect, and relax, including a student and resident lounge, a café, and collaborative study areas on the first floor.

“This project is a key step in Boston University’s mission to make the Goldman School of Dental Medicine a premier institution that promotes excellence in dental education,” said Les Hiscoe, CEO of Shawmut Design and Construction.

“We’re honored to play an integral role in this project and Boston University’s evolving campus, helping them continue to attract top young minds and maintain a competitive edge within the higher education landscape.”

“As we continue working on the renovation of Myles Standish Hall, we’re eager to be teaming up with Boston University again for yet another campus milestone,” said Kevin Sullivan, vice president at Shawmut. “Working on a live campus in an urban setting is always challenging, but our team has the experience and strategies in place to make this project as seamless as possible.”

When it comes to corporate interior spaces for both commercial and industrial projects, partnering with a design-build firm with in-house interior design services can offer clients many benefits. Ask the Electrician: How do I prepare my commercial building for a disaster?

New England’s notorious weather – from fierce winter storms to summer squalls and fall hurricanes – can leave businesses in the dark. While power outages are often blamed on storms, they can also be caused by unforeseen events like accidents or construction mishaps. While it’s impossible to prevent disasters and power outages entirely, proactive preparation can significantly minimize their impact on your commercial building.

State legislature ends session without passing PLA bill - by Joe Camilo

Massachusetts taxpayers dodged a bullet when the state Senate didn’t take up legislation passed by the House in the waning moments of the legislative session that would have made it easier for municipalities and state agencies to use union-only project labor agreements (PLAs) on construction projects.
