CoreNet Global New England president’s message: Sharing best practices & thought leadership

CoreNet Global New England Annual Charitable Golf Tournament, October 6, 2022.

CoreNet is an incredible community whose members collaborate, share insights, and look to elevate the real estate industry as a whole. One of the biggest benefits of being part of this network is the ability to learn from what other organizations are doing to take advantage of similar opportunities within the industry. Sharing best practices and thought leadership is something the New England Chapter does best.

Last month, our chapter attended the Eastern Regional Symposium (ERS) at George Washington University in Washington D.C. as one of the six host chapters of CoreNet Global in the Northeast region. There was no shortage of interesting conversations on the state of real estate, including sessions on the geo-political landscape and world economy, that provided a macro-view of impacts on our industry and daily lives. Many participants enjoyed hearing perspectives from outside the industry from the likes of BBC and Morning Brew’s Katty Kay and JLL’s Peter Miscovich on “A New Era of Global Relations.” A highlight of the conference was also a tour of Amazon’s new HQ2 in Arlington, Virginia, which revealed the core challenge for Amazon and many companies looking to expand: the commitment of the community to invest in the talent they needed to grow. We’re positive that our chapter-sponsored student, Makella, Houdagba from Suffolk University made the most of her time at ERS!

We also continue to live by our commitment of Doing Well by Doing Good to help lift up those in our industry who may not have the resources to advance their own careers. Many of our member firms have invested in their talented leaders through our Leadership 2.0 professional development program. We look forward to sharing the 2023-24 cohort on July 14th, and the program kicks off in early September with a Caliper Assessment and one-on-one executive coaching. Additionally, our chapter has shown immense support for our CREST (Commercial Real Estate Success Training) internship and mentorship program - we have a waitlist of mentors looking to be paired with students! All of our chapter-paired CREST interns will receive complimentary memberships so they can take advantage of all the programs and special initiatives of CoreNet Global New England, including a private golf clinic on August 1st at Granite Links hosted by our Young Leaders and DEI Committees, as the golf course quickly becomes the new office.

This summer, we still have plenty of opportunities to get outside, connect with new and old friends, and learn more about our industry. From our annual Summer Soiree to a tour of the Southline complex, we have something for everyone. And don’t forget about our Annual Charitable Golf Tournament in October! Please see more details about all of these events and register on our website.

Investing in a falling rate environment - by Harrison Klein

Long-term interest rates have fallen by 100 basis points, and the market is normalizing. In December of 2022 I wrote an article about investing in a high interest rate, high inflation market. Since then, inflation has cooled off, and the Fed has begun lowering their funds rate.

The industrial markets have never been stronger. What has happened is that the build out of Devens with new high-tech biotech manufacturing with housing to service these buildings serves as the connector required to really make the I-495 West market sizzle. Worcester has been the beneficiary
