The Architectural Team's historic renovation design of Whaler's Place Apartments was recently honored with a J. Timothy Anderson Award for Excellence in Historic Rehabilitation by the National Housing and Rehabilitation Association (NH&RA). One of more than 40 award submissions received from across the United States, Whaler's Place Apartments was one of just eight award-winning projects, winning one of the affordable housing categories.
The J. Timothy Anderson Awards, also known as the "Timmy Awards," were created in memory of Boston architect and preservation advocate J. Timothy Anderson, and honor outstanding development projects throughout the United States that involve both the rehabilitation of historic buildings and the federal historic rehabilitation tax credit. Judging is based on overall design and quality, interpretation and respect of historic elements, and impact on the community.
"We are extremely honored to receive a Timmy Award for Whaler's Place Apartments," said Robert Verrier, AIA, vice president and principal at The Architectural Team. "With a portfolio that includes more than 200 historic conversion designs, this award is a testament to The Architectural Team's ongoing commitment to restoring historical elements in these viable buildings while revitalizing them to new use."
The Architectural Team designed the $17 million conversion of the Whitman Mill No. 1 into an affordable residential community for active adults aged 55 years and older for Winn Development of Boston. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the 120,000 s/f former cotton textile mill building was constructed in 1895 and employed 1,750 people during its business peak.
Whaler's Place, completed in late 2006, includes 75 apartments with soaring timber beam ceilings, as well as several resident amenities, including a community lounge and cafe, fitness center, computer center, and billiards room.
This is the second consecutive year The Architectural Team and Winn Development have won a Timmy Award. In 2006, the firms were honored with a Timmy Award for the historic conversion of The Apartments at Boott Mills in Lowell, Mass.
