David Scharfenberg

Newton, MA Northland, a leading real estate private equity firm, has welcomed David Scharfenberg as senior vice president, multifamily. In his role, Scharfenberg will direct and oversee all aspects of the company’s multifamily property management operations. Bringing over two decades of experience in real estate management and operations, Scharfenberg’s leadership will be instrumental in guiding Northland’s multifamily teams, comprising over 500 professionals both on-site across 16 states and in corporate roles, to maintain the highest standards of operational, financial, and service excellence. As senior vice president, Scharfenberg will also work alongside president and chief operating officer Suzanne Abair to develop and effectuate Northland’s overall business strategy as the firm continues to expand its portfolio and operating platform.

Prior to joining Northland, Scharfenberg served for over 12 years as the senior vice president of operations at Waterton, where he played a pivotal role in managing and repositioning a $10+ billion portfolio. He oversaw the acquisition of more than 40 communities and the disposition of 22 properties. Before his time at Waterton, he was a regional director for Holiday Retirement where he managed the operations and sales for senior living communities throughout the state of Washington. He also spent nine years with Oakwood Worldwide where he had oversight of corporate housing communities in major U.S. markets. Scharfenberg’s early career began at the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin, Texas where he held various managerial roles, cultivating a deep understanding of hospitality and customer service.

“I’m excited to join the Northland team and build on its longstanding commitment to its employees, residents, and investors,” said Scharfenberg. “This is an excellent opportunity in which the resident experience is a priority, and I can support the team while also fostering the growth of our portfolio. I look forward to collaborating with dedicated long-term employees, harnessing their expertise to create communities our residents are proud to call home, and executing strategies that make a tangible impact on operations across our entire portfolio.”

“We are thrilled to welcome David to Northland,” said Matthew Gottesdiener, CEO of Northland. “His multi-decade expertise in multifamily operations makes him an invaluable addition to lead our national property management and operational strategy teams. As a leader, David exemplifies core values to Northland in his passion for excellence and commitment to residents. We look forward to partnering with David as we author Northland’s future, together, and drive our continued growth nationally.”
