McMahon joins Fletcher Thompson as principal of Rhode Island office

Christopher McMahan, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C, has joined Fletcher Thompson as principal of the firm's R.I. office at 17 Virginia Ave. "Fletcher Thompson is confident that Kip's design skills, client focus and knowledge will enhance our firm's portfolio, and open up possibilities for forming new client relationships and securing new and exciting work," said Michael Marcinek, managing partner of Fletcher Thompson. McMahan's 25 years of architectural experience includes planning and design services for higher education clients, non-profit institutions and real estate developers throughout New England and New York. These projects range from the planning, programming and designing of large-scale, mixed-use commercial development sites to numerous buildings for universities, religious and art organizations. He has provided design leadership for multiple projects, including the Courtyard by Marriott at Union Station, which received a Masonry Institute award, LaSalle Academy Shea Science Building, the Community College of Rhode Island's Knight and Liston campuses. His restoration project for Rosedale Apartments, an Art Moderne complex on Narragansett Bay, received a preservation commission award in 2007. Alongside the firm's market sector principals, McMahon will lead the programming and design phases, manage the design team, and coordinate, communicate and control all professional service activities that are necessary for each project's successful completion. "I am very impressed by the Fletcher Thompson culture, their emphasis on design through client focus, and the strength of their interdisciplinary architecture and engineering practice"," said McMahan, as he comes on board after a year of collaborating with Fletcher Thompson principals on a variety of projects and initiatives. McMahan received bachelor degrees in fine arts and architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design, where he has participated in RISD design studios and juries over the years, most recently in the fall of 2011 as a Visiting Critic in the Department of Interior Architecture. His professional affiliations include The American Institute of Architects, the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, and the Urban Land Institute. McMahon served for five years as a chairman of the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, volunteered for several non-profit arts organizations boards, and received the Arts and Business Council 2006 Arts Advocate Award. Currently, he is a board member of the New England Foundation for the Arts, and is board vice president of the Veterans Memorial Auditorium Foundation. Fletcher Thompson is an award-winning regional architecture, engineering and interior design firm with multiple office locations on the east coast, that include Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts and Florida. The firm's body of work is focused on the K through 12 education, healthcare, college and university, corporate, development and government areas of practice. The firm's leaders are recognized experts in each practice area and work with their clients to provide an outstanding team of design, technical and management professionals. Last year, Fletcher Thompson celebrated its 101st anniversary of the original practice founded by Leslie Fletcher and Charles Thompson.
