Lila Delman Compass and Vanderbilt International sell ‘The Orchard’ for $10.8 million

Newport, RI Lila Delman Compass and Vanderbilt International Properties negotiated the sale of ‘The Orchard’ (180 Narragansett Ave.) for $10.8 million. Kara Malkovich, of Lila Delman Compass’ Newport office, represented the buyer in this transaction and Stacie Mills and Mary Waddington of Vanderbilt International Properties represented the seller.

‘The Orchard’ is a historic home along the Cliff Walk, offering 14 bedrooms, 13 full and 4 half baths and over 20,000 s/f of living space. Built in 1873, the mansion, carriage house and gardens were thoughtfully restored in 2019. The property includes the finest craftsmanship throughout including dentil molding, paneling, marble floors, handcrafted mahogany doors, Baccarat crystal chandeliers, and marble fireplaces, and most are original to the mansion. Built of yellow Milwaukee brick and Ohio limestone, this home is on 4.75 acres of gardens.

“It’s one of the greatest honors of my career to help broker the sale of The Orchard, one of Newport’s great legacy estates. My connection to the property dates back to one of its early owners - Mrs. Elizabeth (Mrs. Harvey S., Jr. “Betty”) Firestone, an elegant woman and wonderful hostess, who was a dear friend of my late father, a connoisseur and generous patron of the arts,” Malkovich said. “As a young child, I remember visiting the grounds of The Orchard before accompanying him for lunch with Mrs. Firestone, at her abutting main home. To me, selling real estate is more than just numbers, it’s about serving my clients new and old. I thrive on making connections and building deep relationships. It is especially meaningful to continue these bonds through the generations.

According to data maintained by the Rhode Island Statewide MLS, this transaction marks the highest sale in Rhode Island, YTD.*
