Groom Construction Co., Inc. and SV Design begin work on Danvers Community YMCA

Danvers, MA According to Groom Construction, Co., Inc. and SV Design, construction of the Danvers Community YMCA is underway.

The Pickering St. facility, built in 1950, will become more accessible and have its child-care facilities upgraded. The project will include upgrading the preschool, the youth center, locker rooms, and the café. The men’s and women’s locker rooms will be relocated to the first level so they are more accessible, and youth locker rooms will be replaced with a family changing room. The Danvers Y serves 300-500 children each day in its after-school programs, summer camps, swim lessons and preschool, along with other programs.

“SV Design is proud to partner with the Danvers Community YMCA to bring their facility goals to fruition,” said Jennifer Hocherman, associate principal. “The building improvements will create a more accessible facility with enhanced program areas and amenities, as well as critical infrastructure updates. We have enjoyed working on this project with the YMCA immensely and it is very fulfilling to see this community-based organization’s vision brought to life. Groom Construction was honored to be chosen as the construction partner for this great project that will so positively impact the Y members and North Shore community. Throughout the two-year preconstruction phase, we have enjoyed sharing our expertise and constructability advice as the design evolved, to meet the Y’s programmatic goals and budget. We are excited to begin the construction phase and are looking forward to seeing these significant facility improvements being fully enjoyed and utilized by the Danvers YMCA Community.”

“The Danvers YMCA, board of directors, ambassadors, staff and members are excited to be in the construction phase of the renovation here at the Y. For the past two years we have worked with both Groom Construction, and SV Design in the planning and logistics phase of the project. Both organizations are known in the industry for their quality work with YMCA’s and community facilities throughout the region. Now that we are in the construction phase - we are looking forward to transforming our YMCA into a state-of-the-art facility that will make a significant difference for all our members and the communities we serve; Danvers, Boxford, Topsfield and Middleton” said John Somes, Danvers YMCA president and CEO.

Ask the Electrician: How do I prepare my commercial building for a disaster?

New England’s notorious weather – from fierce winter storms to summer squalls and fall hurricanes – can leave businesses in the dark. While power outages are often blamed on storms, they can also be caused by unforeseen events like accidents or construction mishaps. While it’s impossible to prevent disasters and power outages entirely, proactive preparation can significantly minimize their impact on your commercial building.

State legislature ends session without passing PLA bill - by Joe Camilo

Massachusetts taxpayers dodged a bullet when the state Senate didn’t take up legislation passed by the House in the waning moments of the legislative session that would have made it easier for municipalities and state agencies to use union-only project labor agreements (PLAs) on construction projects.
