GCI/ABC annual safety and education night - by Joe Barbone

Joe Barbone, ABC-Mass.

Business is good in our industry right now, but that success wouldn’t amount to much if we couldn’t provide a safe environment for our employees.  Every year, the Gould Construction Institute (GCI), ABC’s fully accredited training affiliate, honors member firms that have demonstrated a truly outstanding commitment to jobsite safety.

On Thursday, May 18th, GCI and ABC will hold our annual Safety & Education Night at Montvale Plaza in Stoneham.  Honoring member companies who have achieved excellence through ABC’s Safety Training Evaluation Process (S.T.E.P.), an organized approach for analyzing and developing safety loss prevention programs, is just the beginning of the evening’s events.  We will also honor GCI instructors, students who are receiving certificates of completion, supervisors who are receiving recognition certificates, and recipients of the ABC Massachusetts Building Our Future Scholarship that provides opportunities for young people who want to pursue careers in construction.

I hope you will consider joining us at Montvale Plaza, and I also urge you to consider becoming a sponsor of the event.  The Gould symbolizes ABC member companies’ dedication to safety and training.  That dedication is demonstrated by the fact that GCI is breaking all records with an enrollment that topped 800 students this year.  We also set a record for S.T.E.P. applications.

Safety & Education Night draws attention to the importance of training and jobsite safety.  Recognizing companies that have demonstrated their dedication to both encourages others to follow suit, and that’s a win for everyone involved – companies, employees and clients.

The event also marks the only time all year that CCI asks for any financial support outside of tuition.  There is no better cause than the training and safety of our workers.  If you would like to display your company’s dedication to safety and training, please contact Diane Craven at 781-270-9990 ext. 1121 or diane@gwgci.org to become a sponsor.  I look forward to seeing you on May 18th in Stoneham.

Joe Barbone is the 2017 chairman of the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. – Mass. Chapter, Woburn, Mass. and is the president and CEO of Methuen Construction, Plaistow, N.H.

Investing in a falling rate environment - by Harrison Klein

Long-term interest rates have fallen by 100 basis points, and the market is normalizing. In December of 2022 I wrote an article about investing in a high interest rate, high inflation market. Since then, inflation has cooled off, and the Fed has begun lowering their funds rate.

The industrial markets have never been stronger. What has happened is that the build out of Devens with new high-tech biotech manufacturing with housing to service these buildings serves as the connector required to really make the I-495 West market sizzle. Worcester has been the beneficiary
