Bowdoin Construction recognized for Excellence by ABC-Mass. Chapter

Bowdoin Construction has been named the recipient of two Excellence in Construction Award from the Mass. Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). Bowdoin won first place in the "Commercial/Institutional/Industrial over $5 million" category for new construction and historic renovation on the South Shore Baptist Church in Hingham, and a second-place award in the same category for building a new campus center at the Rivers School in Weston. Bowdoin is one of only 13 contractors selected as recipients of ABC's 2012 Excellence in Construction Awards. "Bowdoin's work represents the state-of-the-art in construction," said Mass. ABC president Greg Beeman. "They should be justifiably proud of this achievement. Work of this caliber is helping to raise the standards of excellence throughout the construction industry." Bowdoin voluntarily conducted a thermal imaging study of the existing South Shore Baptist Church building envelope. The study identified areas where heat was being lost and proposed energy-efficiency options like new insulation and wood siding that the church could afford thanks to Bowdoin's rigid cost control. Expedited mid-winter replacement of an old oil heating system with a new gas system meant church missed no weekend services. At the Rivers School, Bowdoin kept the project on time during one of the snowiest winters in the area's history by breaking down the master schedule into smaller parts to keep all trades clear on schedule requirements. State-of-the-art technologies include full-wall classroom white boards and computer stations in common areas. Architects Strekalovsky Architecture for the South Shore Baptist Church project Davio Designs for the Rivers School student center were recognized along with Bowdoin as part of the project team. The award winners were selected by an independent panel of expert judges based on execution of design, craftsmanship, attention to detail, safety and other considerations. The judges were Domenic D'Eramo of Tetra Tech Rizzo; Russel Feldman of TBA Architects, Inc.; Leslie Haines of Parsons; George Khouri of George J. Khouri & Associates and Vernon Woodworth of AKF Group LLC. Associated Builders and Contractors is the largest construction trade association in Massachusetts, representing more than 400 construction and construction-related firms, including developers, general contractors, subcontractors.

New England’s notorious weather – from fierce winter storms to summer squalls and fall hurricanes – can leave businesses in the dark. While power outages are often blamed on storms, they can also be caused by unforeseen events like accidents or construction mishaps. While it’s impossible to prevent disasters and power outages entirely, proactive preparation can significantly minimize their impact on your commercial building.

State legislature ends session without passing PLA bill - by Joe Camilo

Massachusetts taxpayers dodged a bullet when the state Senate didn’t take up legislation passed by the House in the waning moments of the legislative session that would have made it easier for municipalities and state agencies to use union-only project labor agreements (PLAs) on construction projects.

Ask the Electrician: Is summer a prime time for commercial electrical maintenance?
