Walsh Brothers to build residence hall for MIT - expected to meet or exceed LEED v4 Gold certification

Cambridge, MA Walsh Brothers, Inc. has been selected by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for pre-construction and construction management services for a new undergraduate residence hall to be built. This project will incorporate sustainable strategies to reduce energy and strengthen community. The undergraduate residence will be located on Vassar St. on MIT’s West Campus on the current site of the West Garage.

The residence will be designed to achieve the maximum bed count for the selected site, along with a complement of activity, support, and community spaces shaped by student input. The building is slated to be ready for students by fall 2020.

MIT is committed to building performance that is expected to meet or exceed LEED v4 Gold certification. In support of this commitment, MIT has challenged Walsh Brothers and the project design team of Michael Maltzan Architecture, Inc. and DiMella Shaffer to integrate architectural and project delivery approaches that will provide innovative, economically reasonable and technically feasible solutions to sustainable construction.

Working as a collaborative team early in the design will allow for the review of options to improve the building’s systems and materials used, as well as the most beneficial approach to how the building will be constructed on time and on budget.
