Seaver Construction completes MCC Biotech Teaching Lab for Middlesex Community College

Lowell, MA Seaver Construction has completed renovations for the new MCC Biotech Teaching Lab for Middlesex Community College. The fast-track 6,900 s/f project involved a complete renovation to the fifth floor of the 1890’s era Talbot Science building. The former office space was converted to a simulated ISO7 clean room (class 10,000) along with teaching classrooms with associated laboratory equipment.

Seaver worked closely with the MCC’s project management firm NV5, and design team Jacobs Engineering. Frank Kennedy of NV5 said, “The project was 30% complete at the start of the COVID crisis, however Seaver met initial milestones in extraordinary ways to maintain construction presence and secure trades and materials. The dedicated team including the superintendent went over and above to assure quality of workmanship as well as accommodating an on-going occupied teaching facility.”

The biotechnology teaching program is intended to help the college scale up its biotechnology program by infusing a Learn and Earn Experience for students. The program imitates a large-scale biologics facility, which makes for a practical hands-on training experience. Middlesex is the first community college to receive a grant from the Strategic Grant Partners.

The Biotech program is a collaboration with industry partners designed to ensure students gain relevant work experience at the same time as they are completing their academic studies.
