Quonset Business Park is Rhode Island’s leading economic development and job growth engine. Quonset Development Corporation (QDC) is also leading by example on energy efficiency. QDC was recognized by the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources (OER) recently for efforts to implement clean energy at our main offices and various buildings throughout the business park.

QDC was acknowledged for the Quonset Rooftop Solar Project, which involves the installation of a rooftop array on two buildings owned by the QDC, and the proposed development of future solar projects. The 2.25 MW rooftop arrays will provide 2,920,815 kW hrs AC annually to the park. Both roofs were leased to Energy Development Partners, LLC, were fully replaced in 2017 and later, the solar arrays were installed. The project is on track to be fully operational by the end of July 2018.

Once the project is finished, these rooftop arrays will provide 100% of the power needed to run the QDC main office and annex buildings, along with the port operations office, water distribution system, wastewater collection and treatment system and streetlights throughout the business park.

OER’s annual Leading by Example Awards Ceremony honors the efforts of institutions to implement clean energy. State government agencies, municipalities, quasi-public agencies and public colleges and universities that have made significant efforts to promote clean energy and have completed at least 50% of an energy efficiency project are eligible to be recognized.

Quonset Development Corp. is proud to be a leader in job creation and economic development and also to be honored as a state leader in energy efficiency. We are excited to announce that QDC will soon be 100% powered by clean energy. We appreciate being recognized by governor Raimondo and the Office of Energy Resources for recognizing our efforts to remain at the forefront of energy efficiency.

Steven King, PE, is the managing director of the Quonset Development Corp., North Kingstown, R.I.
