President's message: Say goodbye to summer

Say goodbye to summer. I hope you all had some time off and feel energized to make the final run to the end of the year. September and October are my favorite months weather-wise. I love those sunny 70-75 degree days with no humidity. They make me want to play golf! Speaking of golf, take some time to sign up and play at the McKenny-Kinsella Memorial Golf Tournament on Monday, September 29. This is always a fun networking event and net proceeds go toward scholarships for candidates seeking designation. This year's event is being held at Stow Acres Country Club in Stow Mass. Get your foursomes together or sign up individually and we'll pair you with a group. We are also looking for tournament sponsors. Contact me if you have any questions. September and October are a very busy time for the Chapter. Your volunteer chapter committee members have been very busy developing interesting programs and educational offerings for you. Join us for our fall chapter meeting on September 16 at the Save the Bay facility in Providence. The event titled "High Performance Energy Efficient Residential Construction: Industry Perspectives" will feature a panel of respected industry professionals. The program will be followed by a cocktail reception. October 2 we co-sponsor with the Commercial Brokers Association (CBA) our annual Commercial Real Estate Forum - Economic, Capital Markets, and Investment Outlook program in Boston. The insightful, witty and humorous William McCall, Jr. will once again moderate a high-powered panel of Boston-based industry experts. October 6 we jointly sponsor the New England Appraiser Expo (The Expo) with the MBREA. We have a joint morning session followed by residential and commercial afternoon sessions. Take a minute to checkout our website to view the program offerings. This is a perennial favorite networking event. In addition to these programs we have a number of seminar offerings in September and October. Be sure to check the website for details. Candidates Corner: I want to take a minute to remind our candidates that you have minimum annual progress requirements. The summer passes quickly and there is a small window of opportunity in the early fall before we go full bore into the crazed holiday season. Take a minute to review your plan and make adjustments. Don't let up. Contact your advisor if you have questions. Completing your designation requirements is hard work but with the right plan you will achieve success and earn your designation. That's all I've got for now. I need to go find my golf clubs and get ready for the tournament. I hope to see you there! Joseph Comperchio, SRA, is the 2014 president of the Mass. & R.I. chapter of the Appraisal Institute, and works for commercial banking at Chase, Boston, MA.

Real estate without good estate planning - a troublesome problem - by Daniel Calano

Real estate without good estate planning - a troublesome problem - by Daniel Calano

I spent the better part of a day this week working with attorneys on estate planning. I am clearly not an attorney, but I have learned much over the years while consulting on real estate, its potential, its future during the life of clients, as well as, shall we say, later.

Tariffs: Existential threat, or serious real estate impacts - by Daniel Calano

You must know from all the news, that “Trump tariffs” have been recently reviewed, discussed, evaluated, and as promised, implemented swiftly. But, they have also been modified, reduced or increased, just as fast and somewhat quixotically.

It’s a confusing real estate world: Don’t you think? - by Daniel Calano

The news is full of “never before” pronouncements. Never before has there been a pandemic so impactful on real estate. Never before has technology allowed for remote business meetings on such a frequent basis. Never before would people so comfortably work from home as to vacate office buildings, at least on Fridays and Mondays.
