Norwood, MA J. Calnan & Associates (JC&A), Northstar Project and Real Estate Services, Troika and AHA Engineers have “broken the ice” on a brand new 180,000 s/f training facility for The Skating Club of Boston that is planned to open next summer.

The $37 million, three-rink facility will feature a sports injury prevention and strength training center, dance studio, club and team locker rooms, coaches lounge, ticket office, lobby café, trophy room, library, multiple guest areas and meeting rooms, and an apparel and equipment store. The Skating Club of Boston’s business office will also be housed in the new building. The new facility will be located at 750 University Ave.

“This facility has been nearly 20 years in the making, and the club is thrilled for it now to become a reality,” said Joe Blount, president, The Skating Club of Boston. “The club’s heart will always be a part of Boston, but for this expansion, we needed the space that is no longer available in the city proper.  The town of Norwood has been an exceptional partner in planning for this new facility, and extremely welcoming to the club.  We are all looking forward to a long and rewarding relationship.”

The center of the action of the new building will be an Olympic-size arena called The Performance Center that will seat 2,500 spectators and host exhibitions, shows and competitions for figure skating and short-track speed skating. The second rink will be a dedicated figure-skating rink for training and competitive events with 1,500 seats, and the third will be an NHL-sized, multi-purpose rink with 400 seats, equipped for hockey play.

The new facility will also include The Micheli Center at The Skating Club of Boston, a 7,000 s/f area, designed by fitness, injury prevention and sports & wellness professionals, that will have private offices for athlete evaluations, examinations, physical therapy, x-ray imaging, sports psychology and nutritional counseling.

“One of my very first skating memories as a young boy was to go to The Skating Club of Boston and have the privilege of actually getting on the ice,” said Scott Hamilton, Olympic Champion. “I always knew there would be a day where a facility like The Skating Club would need to be updated to expand its culture and unique identity with future generations. This brand-new facility will do just that. And it won’t just be Boston that benefits from it, but the entire skating community.  The Skating Club of Boston has been a great partner with the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation and I’m honored to be a part of the groundbreaking event to support the next 100 years of this historic institution.”

“As one of the original seven charter members of U.S. Figure Skating, The Skating Club of Boston holds great significance in the history of the American sport,” said Anne Cammett, president, U.S. Figure Skating. “The groundbreaking for this state-of-the-art training facility will only further inspire greatness from the historic club that produced U.S. Figure Skating’s first two Olympic champions, Dick Button and Tenley Albright. The Skating Club of Boston’s commitment to excellence will be felt for generations to come, and I look forward to watching this growth and celebrating its future successes.”

“We’re so proud to be part of this incredible project for the Skating Club of Boston,” said Stephen Robak, executive vice president, partner, JC&A.  “They have such a rich history spanning over 100 years and have had a huge impact on the figure skating community.  We look forward to delivering this world class facility next summer that will form the foundation and benefit the entire figure skating world for the next 100 years!”

Investing in a falling rate environment - by Harrison Klein

Long-term interest rates have fallen by 100 basis points, and the market is normalizing. In December of 2022 I wrote an article about investing in a high interest rate, high inflation market. Since then, inflation has cooled off, and the Fed has begun lowering their funds rate.
