IREM President’s Message: The final quarter of 2022

As we embark on the final quarter of 2022, October is always a great time to take stock in things, to look at the goals you set out for yourself and your organization at the beginning of the year, and see where you stand with regard to those goals. Have most of them been achieved, or are they in the process of being achieved? Are there maybe one or two goals that you haven’t even started working toward (and, possibly, totally forgot about after identifying them)? Maybe some of those goals now feel much less of a priority than they did back in January.

This month is a great time to reflect back on what you set out to accomplish at the beginning of the year, look at what you’ve achieved, and determine what your priorities should be now in these last three months, to either meet the rest of your goals or to shift them to match the current climate. If something else has come up that will take more of your time over the next few months, perhaps think about creating a second tier of goals – ones that are still important, just not as urgent, and that could perhaps wait until the first quarter of the next year.

Throughout this process, though, it is definitely important to take a moment and recognize yourself and your organization for all that you have accomplished over these last nine months. I’m sure many of us (myself included) thought – October, already?!? Where did this year go?!? – when we turned this last calendar page. But by taking some time to check in and see where you’re at and what you still have left to do, you also can see the great things you’ve already done. Where has this year gone? We’ve been busy, getting things done and making things better – and as the saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun!

Have some fun with this exercise at the beginning of the month, and I think you’ll feel renewed and ready to meet the rest of the year’s lingering goals head on!

Investing in a falling rate environment - by Harrison Klein

Long-term interest rates have fallen by 100 basis points, and the market is normalizing. In December of 2022 I wrote an article about investing in a high interest rate, high inflation market. Since then, inflation has cooled off, and the Fed has begun lowering their funds rate.

The industrial markets have never been stronger. What has happened is that the build out of Devens with new high-tech biotech manufacturing with housing to service these buildings serves as the connector required to really make the I-495 West market sizzle. Worcester has been the beneficiary
