G. Greene Construction celebrates groundbreaking of new headquarters

Boston, MA On Friday, April 5, a groundbreaking ceremony was held to celebrate G. Greene Construction’s new corporate headquarters. Located along the Mass Pike in the Allston Landing region of the city, G. Greene is looking forward to the company’s next chapter.

Although the day was cold and damp, it didn’t seem to matter to employees, colleagues and friends. Everyone was excited to be in attendance. Bob Greene, surrounded by his family said, “There are a lot of memories in the old building, but we are ready to make new ones. My dad would be happy today, he always said we get up every morning to go to our hobby not a job.” Bob’s mom Florence said, “My husband is very proud looking down on his son and if he could, he would tell him how proud he is, as I am.”

Designed as a modern, 3-story, white and glass structure, the neighborhood is equally excited for this new addition. The new building incorporates a mix of “open-concept” and privacy measures enabling both personal comfort and collaborative flow for employees. Offices with glass sliders are being built on the outer perimeter of the building so natural light will shine through-out the work areas. Using dedicated LEAN practices, every aspect of the design, schedule, budgeting and approach have been thoroughly managed towards maximum efficiency.

Conscious of the overall carbon footprint, G. Greene has implemented a plan including pre-fabricated insulated metal panels (interior and exterior), PV solar panels, specialty glazing, energy efficient lighting systems with light detection and an energy efficient elevator.

Shelby Greene, while still in college has begun integrating into the daily construction activities, just as her father Bob did 35 years ago. Shelby now joins other 3rd generation G. Greene employees linking current owner Bob Greene and her grandfather, founder Gabe Greene. Shelby said, “I grew up in the old office and this new building means a lot to me. My dad helped build the old building and now I’m involved in this new project.”

The temporary offices located on site, gave the G. Greene team the ability to watch the building being demolished and will allow them to see every facet of the new construction. The new corporate headquarters is scheduled to be complete in spring 2020.

For decades, New England has had a summer-peaking power system, where the greatest energy use occurs on the hottest and most humid days, due to widespread use of air conditioning. But by the mid-2030s, electrification of the heating sector likely will result in a winter peak that’s higher than the summer peak.
