D.E.W. Construction completes 167,000 s/f UVM Redstone Lofts: Wolpert of Youkel, architect

D.E.W. Construction Corp. has completed the Redstone Lofts project at the University of Vermont. Redstone Lofts are UVM's largest on-campus student housing complex, with two buildings and 403 beds, within 144 units. The housing is a mix of studio, one, two, three, and four-bedroom apartments. The two buildings are joined by a common room called the Lantern. Redstone Lofts is owned by UVM's Catamount Housing, LLC. Redstone Development, a Burlington commercial real estate company, developed the project on the UVM campus under a long-term ground lease. Redstone will continue to manage the buildings and rental agreements. D.E.W. broke ground for the 167,000 s/f buildings in April, 2011. Bill Wolpert of Youkel was the architect. The project was completed in July, ahead of schedule. D.E.W. has registered for and anticipates LEED Silver certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certifications are awarded by the Green Building Certification Institute to projects that meet green building practices and performance. Kristin Fortin, D.E.W.'s project manager for Redstone Lofts, says the buildings are a landmark for UVM and the city of Burlington. "There is nothing else like the Lofts around. They are not at all like the typical buildings constructed in Burlington. People will talk about them forever. I feel privileged to be part of the entire process. We were very successful and I couldn't be more happy," said Fortin.
