Cutler honored for University of New Hampshire Turbulence Research Facility

Cutler Associates, a Worcester-based general contractor, has been named the recipient of a second place Excellence in Construction Award from the Massachusetts Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). Cutler's award in the annual statewide competition is in the "Commercial/Institutional/Industrial $1-$5 million" category for its construction of a Durham, NH Turbulence Research Facility. Cutler is one of only 16 contractors selected as recipients of ABC's 2011 Excellence in Construction Awards. "Cutler's work represents the state-of-the-art in construction," said Mass. ABC president Greg Beeman. "They should be justifiably proud of this achievement. Work of this caliber is helping to raise the standards of excellence throughout the construction industry." The 12,400 s/f facility includes a 300-foot wind tunnel and houses two 400-horsepower fans, each moving 250,000 cubic feet of air per minute and generating a wind force of 28 miles per hour. Competition judges noted the significant new research this project will allow, including new data on airplane aerodynamics and weather prediction. Project owner University of New Hampshire and architect Cutler Design, Inc. were recognized along with Cutler as part of the project team. The award winners were determined by an independent panel of expert judges based on execution of design, craftsmanship, attention to detail, safety and other considerations. The judges were: Daniel Carson, Daniel Carson Consulting Engineering, Charles Sacre, Kleinfelder/SEA Consultants, Paul Tyrell, STV Incorporated, Jim Flanagan, FlanaConsulting. Associated Builders and Contractors is the largest construction trade association in Massachusetts, representing more than 400 construction and construction-related firms, including developers, general contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and associates. -30-
