BOMA Boston update – Back to school and back to BOMA!

The sold out BOMA Networking Nite was a great success on September 5th! Close to 200 BOMA members and industry guests came together at Newmark’s 53 State St. Thank you to Compass Facility Services and Newmark for hosting.

The submission deadline for the 2024 TOBY & Industry Awards is on September 9th. The TOBY and Industry Awards recognize the best and brightest in property management excellence. The BOMA Boston TOBY & Industry awards are one of the largest in the country, and the largest in the Northeast. Recognize your peers and colleagues with prestigious Industry Award nominations, and/or nominate your building to compete with the best of the best in an array of categories! BOMI: The Design, Operation, and Maintenance of Building Systems, Part II class will take place on Tuesdays and Thursday’s starting on September 10th and will conclude on October 3rd. Class will be held virtual on Zoom from 4:00 – 7:00 pm and will be taught by David Thompson, director of engineering, Newmark. The Design, Operation, and Maintenance of Building Systems, Part II is for property and facilities managers who need to make management decisions about various building systems and sites. Your decisions will increase occupant safety and comfort while facilitating building efficiency to meet the business goals of an organization. Critical topics in this course include electrical systems and lighting, elevator maintenance and modernization, pest and solid waste management, security issues, fire and life safety systems, and energy management concerns. In recognition of Preparedness Month, the BOMA Preparedness Committee is hosting a roundtable on preparing for disruptions with large scale events and demonstrations. The lunch program will be held on Thursday, September 19th at a convenient downtown location. Panelists will discuss best practices and communications with staff and tenants when preparing for these events. Registration is open and is complimentary for BOMA members and $60 for nonmembers. BOMA Boston will host a Connect with BOMA Breakfast Tuesday, October 8th at Chrome Gym (1 Center Plaza, Boston) 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. The Connect with BOMA Breakfast is designed for current, new, and prospective members to learn more about committee involvement, networking opportunities, BOMI Course offerings, and how to become more involved with BOMA. BOMA staff will be on site to answer any questions you might have regarding your membership. Complimentary to BOMA Boston members & prospective members.

2024 BOMA Fallfest is on October 10th, 2024 at 100 Federal St. Just around 300 BOMA industry and affiliate companies will join for a night of networking. Registration is complimentary for BOMA industry members and $75 for industry nonmembers. Affiliate/vendor companies must be members and sponsor the event in order to attend. BOMI: Real Estate Investment & Finance will kick off on Tuesday, October 15th and will occur Tuesdays and Thursdays, ending on November 17th. Class will be held virtually on Zoom from This course teaches you to take charge of real estate investments to maximize a property’s value. Combining the latest industry practices with practical applications, you will learn basic financial concepts related to real estate, including income capitalization, valuation, analysis, taxation, depreciation, and life cycle costing. In addition, you’ll learn to evaluate real estate investments and develop budgets estimating net operating income, including spreadsheet examples that showcase current calculation methods and provide multiple resources to address your investment and finance needs. Join us for this half-day short course to learn about Drawing Basics and how to read blueprints and architectural drawings from beginning to end on Wednesday, October 23rd. The course will cover the four Ds of how-to bring project management and commercial real estate to life - Discovery, Design, Documentation, and Delivery. Iramis Luz Audet and John Hubbard with Ci Design Inc, will deliver a comprehensive lesson plan that will leave you feeling more confident about the project management component of the industry. BOMI: Law & Risk Management will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from November 18th to December 12th. In today’s complex business environment, it is becoming increasingly important for property managers to know how to address legal and risk management issues. This course will provide a foundation in the basic principles of law and risk management, helping you deal with everyday legal and risk issues. The new application-based microlessons provide a guided tutorial for the correct process of creating a deed and the legal aspects of enforcing it, tools and strategies to ensure your lease agreements are fully compliant - minimizing risks and maximizing returns, and an understanding of how to manage insurance coverage strategically, ensuring optimal protection while avoiding over-insurance pitfalls.
