The Boston chapter of ASIS International will hold Security Expo 2008 - billed as "New England's premier security education experience and trade show" - on Wednesday, April 30th, at the Holiday Inn Boxborough Woods in Boxborough, Mass. The event, themed "A Legacy of Security Leadership - Creating Great Strides for our Future" will offer educational and networking opportunities for security professionals, corporate executives, risk and compliance professionals, human resources managers, government employees, students and anyone with an interest in security. Boston's annual Security Expo with more than 85 exhibits will showcase the security products and services which are transforming the industry. In addition to the vendor and networking opportunities available to attendees, there will be a first-rate luncheon, a raffle with outstanding prizes, and an educational program featuring industry experts speaking on topics of relevance and importance to business and security professionals. The speakers and topics include: Rita Katz, an expert on international terrorists and their financial operations, and the author of Terrorist Hunter: The Extraordinary Story of a Woman who Went Undercover to Infiltrate the Radical Islamic Groups Operating in America (Harper Collins, 2003). Katz will speak on "Al-Qaeda Online and the Domestic Threat," how jihadists use the internet to indoctrinate, recruit, communicate, and provide military training. Todd McGhee, a highly sought after authority in the field of proactive threat mitigation strategies for critical infrastructure, and a trainer of the Mass. State Police's Anti-Terrorism Unit at Boston's Logan International Airport. McGhee will present "The Patriot System," (ProActive Terrorist Recognition and Interdiction Operations and Tactics System), a method that trains police, security officials, and front line employees in large public venues to examine scores of patrons per minute, isolate the potential high-risk patron, and determine if they are a threat through a simple non-custodial interview. A lively interactive panel discussion on background screening entitled, "You've Hired a Criminal, now can you defend against a negligent hiring lawsuit?" Moderated by Norman Bates, president of Liability Consultants and David Sawyer, president of Safer Places, this presentation will bring the attendees up to date on the latest trends in background investigations, and explain the implications of the latest national standards in pre-employment screening. Hank Nolin, CPP, CAS, CHSIII, a U. S. Army retired Master Sgt with over 27 years of military service and 12 years of training and utilization of explosive and narcotic detection K-9 teams worldwide. Nolin will be speaking on "K9s: Their Versatility from Security to Environmental Detection." He will discuss not only the canine's vital application in explosive and narcotic detection, but their escalating use in environmental areas such as mold and bedbug inspection.
