2022 Women in Construction: Alecia Comer, President/CEO at A Comer Electrical Services

Alecia Comer

What was your greatest professional achievement or most notable project in the last 12 months? A most recent notable project our crew of A Comer Electrical Services (ACES) completed was Circle Furniture located in Boston’s Seaport. This was a $300,000 contract lasting four months, in which we completed the install of lights, power, fire alarm, and Tel/DATA. With the location in the middle of the popular Seaport District, the visibility of this project has gained attention when often our work goes unnoticed. It is always great to have a high-profile project that we can point out as an ACES success. It is a great professional achievement to see the growth and success of ACES today, just getting off the ground two years ago, while in the midst of facing the challenges of COVID-19.

Starting out in the construction business, who or what empowered you? 20 years of working in the construction industry for different trades, I decided to embark on a journey opening an electrical services company. Empowered by my entrepreneurial spirit and with the respect I have developed for the electrical industry watching my husband follow the footsteps of his father in the electrical trade-my calling was clear.

What tips or advice would you offer to other women who are considering entering the construction industry? I would tell other women who are considering entering the construction industry that the possibilities are limitless. If desire to start a company, consult with peers and business owners and develop a solid business plan. You will need a strong financial plan to get off running. There is always something to learn in the industry. Do not let fear get in the way of your goals and hold you back. Write down your goals, say them out loud, and cross them off as you succeed. If you have a shortcoming, dust off and get back in the game. This is your game to be played! There are many opportunities for women in the construction industry that sometimes get overlooked. College is not the only route to a successful career. Women in particular, need to be open-minded of career opportunities in construction. Today is the day to end all bias and for women to be a part of such a vital industry. It is exciting to think about what the future holds for women in construction!

The industrial markets have never been stronger. What has happened is that the build out of Devens with new high-tech biotech manufacturing with housing to service these buildings serves as the connector required to really make the I-495 West market sizzle. Worcester has been the beneficiary
