2022 Ones to Watch: Paul Yingling, P.E., Project Manager at Helical Drilling

What recent project, transaction or accomplishment are you most proud of? I am proud of several projects completed for high-profile government agencies in a variety of New England locations. One project was a large micropile project with many challenges, including known and unknown obstructions, difficult pile design components, an axial and lateral load test, and a high-water table, which made pile cutting particularly difficult. On similar projects (client type, size, scope, challenges solved), Helical provided our clients with design-build services consisting of micropiles, rock anchors, and soldier piles and lagging. Working on high-security premises requires a detailed approach to project management, coordination, and preparation. Managing these very busy construction areas is challenging and rewarding as they often have limited work hours due to monitoring requirements and coordinating around the high-water table.

What does it take to succeed in your specific industry? In the geotechnical design-build space, I believe expertise, availability, and effective communication are all essential for success. Geotechnical expertise is required to safely design and construct what is required for each project. Being available whenever necessary to keep construction crews productive and projects on track. Communication, patience, and interpersonal skills are essential when dealing with construction problems, whether it’s with our clients, owners, suppliers, or subcontractors. To ensure that details are not lost and initiatives do not stall, organization is essential.

What led you to your current profession? An interest in Geotechnical Construction was established in college, and I was lucky to find Helical Drilling in 2013 where I have grown to truly enjoy the company, the work we do, and the ever-changing challenges.

What are the top 3 items on your bucket list?

  1. Watch my son grow into a healthy and successful adult
  2. Heli-ski
  3. Travel the world with my family

What are you doing when you aren’t working? Spending time with my family (wife, son, and dog), enjoying the outdoors, and relaxing with friends.
