2022 Ones to Watch: Andrew Manning, Site Superintendent at Haynes Group

What recent project, transaction, or accomplishment are you most proud of? The project I am most proud of is my recent work remodeling the Sheraton Hotel in Needham, Mass. Working in an occupied space has its challenges. It requires additional planning and communication in order to maintain a positive experience for hotel guests while at the same time moving forward with the day-to-day operations of a construction site. Because of this, there wasn’t much room for error and important goals and deadlines needed to be met without setbacks. I am proud of the team’s ability to complete the project on time by working together to adapt to the unique needs of the job.

What does it take to succeed in your specific industry? In order to succeed in this industry, you need a positive attitude, teamwork, flexibility, and good communication skills.

What led you to your current profession? Growing up, I spent the summers with my grandparents in Illinois. My grandfather owned a residential construction company and was a talented woodworker. In addition to tagging along with him during his workday, every summer my grandfather would ask me to choose something to make in his woodshop. Throughout the month, I would build something to take home at the end of the summer. It was here that I first experienced the daily instant gratification of construction. At the end of every workday, you can take a step back and physically see your project progressing towards completion. This feeling is still what drives me in my work today.

1. Catch a 50 lb striped bass
2. Go on a cross-country road trip
3. Get my pilot’s license

What are you doing when you aren’t working? When I’m not working, I enjoy fishing on the Narragansett Bay and spending time with my fiancé and family.
