2017 Women in Real Estate Spotlight - Elaine Vega

Elaine Vega
Vice President of Compliance
Housing Management Resources, Inc.

Years in real estate: 27

What real estate associations or organizations are you a member of: IREM, NAHMA, and CHAPA

How have you navigated obstacles to achieve success in your career: I have been fortunate to work with the same team of amazing women throughout most of my career. Through our collaborations over the years, we have learned to communicate at the ‘speed of trust.’ This team approach is important to problem solve complex compliance challenges and to consider all aspects and possible outcomes of the situation. These are also the people I celebrate the joyful events in my life with and who support me through difficult times.

How do you play your strengths to your advantage in your career: Most compliance departments I have known see their role as ‘the enforcer’ with compliance officers demanding that sites scan or fax files over so that compliance can gleefully dig up piles of picky errors.  My greatest strength is my insistence that my department focus on supporting the sites.  At HMR, our sites reach out to compliance to approve a last-minute move-in file or to request on-site help when they are short staffed. We strive to streamline the work flow and eliminate as much busy work as possible.
