2020 Women in Construction: May Docekal, Electrical Engineer at AHA Consulting Engineers

What was your greatest professional achievement or most notable project in the last 12 months? The project I selected is known as The BEAT, the redesign of the Boston Globe Building. It is a 700,000 s/f building situated on 16.5 acres of land. Transforming this historic building into a new modern-day landmark has required intensive interprofessional collaboration that the team is putting into action to achieve the current vision for the space. When this building is complete, there will be something for everyone: Offices/lab spaces, gathering spaces, basketball court, a restaurant, and a brewery. Since this project as so many facets, it’s been an amazing learning experience and opportunity.

When I’m not working I am…I am volunteering closely with the Girl Scout program within my community. For fourteen years, I have served as a leader and mentor. My role as a mentor is to support and inspire girls to become successful in any and all aspects of their futures. I facilitate activities that act as valuable learning experiences for the girls and myself. My career allows me to confidently coordinate STEM-based events, such as hands-on programming or a 3D software home-building workshop. I hope to inspire girls to know they can achieve anything they set their minds to.
