Summer is in full swing - The annual ASM Golf Tournament held July 13

Jim Welch

Summer is in full swing, and the annual ASM Golf Tournament just occurred. This year’s tournament was a sell-out, with nearly 300 golfers registered. Each year, the tournament is integral to how ASM can offer scholarships to deserving students attending or planning to attend college in the fall. Scholarship winners were announced and presented at the golf tournament dinner on July 13.

One of our long-time members, Marr Companies, recently celebrated its 125th Anniversary with a celebration at their new facility in Braintree. ASM congratulates the Marr family and all the women and men who have made their company what it is today.

We are excited that ASM plans to begin offering a lien service to our member companies in collaboration with our friends at Corwin & Corwin LLP. The new program will be rolled out later this summer, with more details to be shared with our members in the coming weeks.

The State House is busy with both the House and the Senate working to resolve the FY ’24 state budget and many committee hearings on legislation we are monitoring. A public hearing took place on June 27 with the Committee on State Administration and Regulatory Oversight to hear many pieces of legislation that ASM will be weighing in on. Notably, one of our top legislative priorities, “An act relative to timely public payments for work not included in original construction contracts,” was part of the hearing, and ASM testified and submitted testimony in favor.

Many other bills dealing with public construction and bid laws will also be held. ASM will monitor these closely to ensure subcontractors are well-represented as the committee considers these issues. As these bills move through the legislative process, we will work every step to ensure our members’ voices are heard.

It promises to be exciting next several weeks as both the House and Senate will be working on legislation before their summer break in August. We will keep you updated on any progress on legislative matters that may affect ASM members.

As always, please contact us if you’d like to learn more about joining our association.

Ask the Electrician: How do I prepare my commercial building for a disaster?

New England’s notorious weather – from fierce winter storms to summer squalls and fall hurricanes – can leave businesses in the dark. While power outages are often blamed on storms, they can also be caused by unforeseen events like accidents or construction mishaps. While it’s impossible to prevent disasters and power outages entirely, proactive preparation can significantly minimize their impact on your commercial building.

Ask the Electrician: Is summer a prime time for commercial electrical maintenance?

The answer is “Yes!” While January marks the official new year, many businesses view September as a fresh start. This makes summer an ideal time for commercial property owners to schedule long-term electrical maintenance projects.

When it comes to corporate interior spaces for both commercial and industrial projects, partnering with a design-build firm with in-house interior design services can offer clients many benefits. Unlike traditional delivery methods where interior designers operate independently from the design and construction teams, often creating a longer project timeline as cost negotiations and revisions ensue

State legislature ends session without passing PLA bill - by Joe Camilo

Massachusetts taxpayers dodged a bullet when the state Senate didn’t take up legislation passed by the House in the waning moments of the legislative session that would have made it easier for municipalities and state agencies to use union-only project labor agreements (PLAs) on construction projects.
