Suffolk Const. completes 90,000 s/f residence hall for Suffolk Univ.

Suffolk Construction joined mayor Thomas Menino, Suffolk University officials and members of the project team to celebrate the opening of Suffolk University's newest residence hall at 10 West St. The grand opening came just six short months after Suffolk's team began the extensive renovation. Suffolk's Education group was the ideal team to complete a project of this complexity on such an aggressive schedule. The team's ability to successfully fast track the project allowed the university to immediately accommodate 274 students in need of campus housing. The residence hall occupies two buildings in Downtown Crossing that once housed condominiums. Suffolk's team connected the adjoining buildings and converted 73 units into four- and six-bedroom student residences. The conversion involved construction of new floor plan layouts, MEP modifications and all new finishes. Designed by CBT Architects, the seven-story, 90,000 s/f residence hall is targeted to achieve LEED Silver Certification through enhanced indoor environmental quality, innovative design techniques, and by utilizing recycled and renewable materials. Suffolk University's residence hall is just the latest project that Suffolk's Education group has completed in the higher education sector. The team is currently underway on projects for Brown University, Emerson College and Northeastern University, among others.

Massachusetts taxpayers dodged a bullet when the state Senate didn’t take up legislation passed by the House in the waning moments of the legislative session that would have made it easier for municipalities and state agencies to use union-only project labor agreements (PLAs) on construction projects.

When it comes to corporate interior spaces for both commercial and industrial projects, partnering with a design-build firm with in-house interior design services can offer clients many benefits. New England’s notorious weather – from fierce winter storms to summer squalls and fall hurricanes – can leave businesses in the dark. While power outages are often blamed on storms, they can also be caused by unforeseen events like accidents or construction mishaps. While it’s impossible to prevent disasters and power outages entirely, proactive preparation can significantly minimize their impact on your commercial building.
