SAK Environmental, LLC has been selected to provide environmental consulting services to the Mass. Division of Capital Asset Management (DCAM) for a three-year period. DCAM is the state agency responsible for major public building construction and real estate services for the Commonwealth.
The breadth of SAK's environmental services to DCAM include: Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site and Risk Assessments to comply with the Mass. Contingency Plan regulations, facility assessments, environmental due diligence and hazardous materials inventories.
"SAK is honored to be selected by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as one of the businesses involved in ensuring the safe and environmentally responsible construction of state building projects," said Maureen Sakakeeny, principal of SAK.
SAK recently completed its first DCAM project on the McGee Building at the North Shore Community College in Lynn. The McGee Building is a 160,000 s/f, three-story, multi-purpose academic building that contains classrooms, laboratories, a gymnasium, a cafeteria, a library and multiple offices. SAK performed a hazardous materials inventory on the McGee Building as part of a comprehensive baseline for potential future renovation and expansion initiatives. The hazardous materials inventory included a detailed inspection of the entire building to collect and analyze representative samples of building materials. Potential contaminants of concern included asbestos-containing materials, polychlorinated biphenyls (aka PCBs), mercury containing equipment, lead-based paint, refrigerants, and containerized waste and raw product storage. This information will give DCAM designers and contractors detailed information to develop a plan that properly removes and disposes of any contaminated material in accordance with environmental regulations, and to ensure worker safety.
Public construction and design projects undertaken by DCAM and other public awarding authorities, including municipal projects receiving state funding, provide significant opportunities for Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) and Women Business Enterprise (WBE) firms to participate on these projects. DCAM has had a long standing program that ensures that minority and women owned businesses have real and meaningful opportunities to work on agency building construction projects. As of January 2012, DCAM has revised and increased their goals regarding involving businesses that are MBE certified or WBE certified. SAK Environmental, LLC is a WBE certified business and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) by the Mass. Supplier Diversity Office.
