In 1940 Tom joined his father on their 100 acre broadleaf tobacco farm. Over 170 years in the family, this had been a booming business. However, due to the revolution produced by the homogenizing process of producing cigar wrapper tobacco, the family went out of the business in 1952 and Tom became a broker-developer. For the next three years he managed Town and Country, a residential real estate brokerage office and in 1956 he opened Thomas J. Hackett Realty & Management in Hartford.
With over 350 acres of prime development land in Manchester and South Windsor, CT, Hackett remains active in commercial and industrial development. Just recently he has taken 52 acres in Manchester and announced plans for a new commercial and industrial center. Tom believes in education and continues to take courses in real estate management. Still a farmer at heart, Tom spends his spare time with his wife cultivating their garden which is located in Essex, CT.
