What was your first position/job in the A/E/C Industry? I accepted an entry level position at the Connecticut Department of Transportation and worked there for over 18 years, before joining BL Companies in 2013.
Why and/or how did you decide on the A/E/C Industry? As a biologist, CTDOT was not where I was planning on ending up. Working in their Environmental Planning Division, some of my first task were to evaluate the success of CTDOT’s wetland mitigation sites, perform wetland delineations and assessments, and work on NEPA/CEPA documentation. I began to work with the engineers to ensure compliance with regulations, and really enjoyed the collaboration of finding solutions to transportation challenges while protecting the environment.
What projects have you participated on? I have worked on projects ranging from local rail to trails initiatives and intersection improvements to major bridge replacements, airport improvements, the New Haven/Hartford/Springfield rail project, CT FastTrack, and numerous state and interstate highway improvements.
Advice/Keys to success: Many of the stereotypes have lessened in this industry since I started. If you do come across them…work past them - drama free. Nothing will prove your worth more than consistent dedication with honesty and poise.
