This year’s Greater Boston Homebuilders Association Vice President, believe it or not, has never built a home. While doing just about everything else in the building game, Joe Scimone plans to construct his first home in a 16-acre Ipswich tract in the near future.
Scimone came up the hard way, starting in 1939 as a timekeeper. Three year as a carpenter’s mate in the Coast Guard was good experience, but it was another 10 years before this experience would pay off. After WWII, Joe enrolled in the country’s greatest salesman course, selling encyclopedias door-to-door. “This was an excellent living for one who was willing to work at it.” In 1949, Scimone joined his four brothers in the furniture business. Joe managed the store until 1954 when they decided to close up shop because of the new discount stores. “The family then started a loan company, which is still active today. I went into the kitchen appliance business, opening my own firm in 1962. Today, I am a partner with Phil Garnick in Kitchen Cabinet Distributors.”
Scimone began building apartments in 1962, along with purchasing and remodeling distressed properties and has development a highly successful reputation in both fields. Married with three children, Joe has a son in the Air Force who will join the firm this spring. “The future will mean more apartment units for us, along with several housing developments and some industrial developments.”
