Bart Perini is the president and chief executive officer of Paramount Development Associates Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Perini Corp., in Framingham.
Paramount is primarily an industrial park developer and handles commercial and residential real estate. Among its notable projects are the Framingham Industrial Park, a 210 acre development which took 20 years to complete; three parks in Natick; and a 92 acre park currently being developed in Easton, Mass.
For the past 13 years, Bart has directed Perini R.E. Development activities in New England. His responsibilities include acquiring, developing, leasing, selling and managing more than 200 acres of land containing over one million sq. ft. of building space. He is also a member of thee Perini planning team which develops strategies and objectives throughout the nation.
Bart joined Perini Corp. in 1962 as a construction management trainee. His experience has included exposure to all types of pipeline and heavy construction. He got his training on such projects as the Massachusetts Turnpike extension. Route 128 to the Southeast Expwy., Prudential Center, the MBTA subway extension from Haymarket Sq., Boston, to Charlestown (which involved tunneling under the Charles River) and a gas and oil pipeline projects in the U.S. and Canada.
He joined Paramount in 1970. The family owned business and was founded by Bart’s grandfather at the turn of the century. The third generation has operated the company since 1973. “We all have construction in our veins…we were fed it on a daily basis,” he says.
“The progression from being involved in the construction end of the business and now handling the real estate development is a very natural one,” Bart says. “The process is the same. We are developers. What we basically do is take raw pieces of land and make substantial improvements to the sites, adding roads and utilities, then Perini markets the land to prospective buyers or builds a spec building, which we do quite often. The two business go hand in hand.”
“Our goal is to continue to grow, adding major projects to our inventor, which is not easily done. It is easy to get involved in a real estate project, but to become involved in a successful one requires intense study, proper planning, innovative financing, the right timing, development expertise and a good measure of luck. We are highly selective. We do extensive market research and analysis before we jump into any project. This is a strategy we have employed in the past and will continue to employ,” says Bart.
He is a member of the National Assn. of Industrial & Office Parks, Boston Chapter; an associate member of the Society of Industrial Realtors; New England Chapter; the Mass. Assn. of Realtors; and the Woodlawn Golf Club.
An avid sailor, Bart spends most of his leisure time sailing along Buzzards Bay and up in the Hudson River. His furthest adventure was up to the Canadian border and down to New York. “I find it’s the only way I can truly relax,” he says. He also enjoys hunting, fishing, sports and hiking.
The Perini family, his wife and two daughters, reside in Natick. Both girls attend Newton County Day School of Sacred Heart.
