J.K. Scanlan, construction manager for Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary receives LEED Platinum

J.K. Scanlan Company Inc., construction manager for the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary project has received the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) highest designation for high-performing green buildings, LEED Platinum. This designation recognizes the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. Only three other buildings in the commonwealth have been awarded this prestigious Platinum-certified designation. The new nature center will be an important model of sustainability in Massachusetts. Green building elements of the project include the most advanced roof, window and ventilation designs to minimize energy consumption. A solar ground array minimizes the amount of electricity drawn from the public electric provider. A rainwater re-use system, composting toilets and a graywater garden were installed in an effort to reduce the building's impact on the surrounding land and to conserve potable water. Use of low volatile organic compound (VOC) paints, adhesives, sealants, and carpeting were used throughout. Timbers one time used in an old mill building were salvaged, re-milled and used for flooring. Over 90% of the construction waste from this project was diverted from a landfill and recycled. The award was achieved in no small part due to the innovative work of the highly dedicated team of professionals, consisting of Mass Audubon's director of capital assets Stu Weinreb and director Bob Prescott, architect Andrew Miao, landscape architect Kris Horiuchi, J.K. Scanlan project manager Nicole Rosa, project superintendent Chris Grant and assistant project manager, Judy Audette. In the process, J.K. Scanlan's in-house and field staff gained the knowledge and expertise to use environmentally sensitive and sustainable building products and systems. J.K. Scanlan's ongoing commitment to green building and goal to be in the forefront of green building technology and have a LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) on every one of our project teams is being realized by the recent completion of LEED training by the Green Roundtable in partnership with a grant provided by the Mass. Workforce Training Fund. This training is intended to assist employees who wish to become LEED AP . J.K. Scanlan currently recognizes four employees who have been awarded the LEED AP status. Nicole Rosa, project manager, Chris Grant, general superintendent, Seth Adams, project manager and Judy Audette, assistant project manager have all successfully passed the accreditation exam. J.K.
