2022 Women in Construction: Annisha Simpson, 4th Year Apprentice at New England Finish Systems
What was your greatest professional achievement or most notable project in the last 12 months? The most notable project I worked on was the Vertex Pharmaceutical science lab in Boston. That job I learned how to do layout, framing and drywall which is a huge amount of the workload in the field. In turn learning those things has made me a more marketable worker.
Starting out in the construction business, who or what empowered you? First starting out in the construction field, my drive for knowledge and the opportunities for growth in the field. Everyday there is something new to learn whether it be political, ethical or hands on.
Within your firm, who has helped you succeed within the industry? How have they helped you? Someone who has helped me a lot in my career since joining is Emerson Ocampo of local 328, since being taken under his wing, and getting me on the doors and hardware crew of New England Finish Systems my work ethic and attitude has changed for the better. I’ve been accomplishing a lot of my goals, very proud of who I’ve become and milestones I still have yet to reach.
What tips or advice would you offer to other women who are considering entering the construction industry? My advice to women coming into the industry I would advise to be a sponge for knowledge ask all the questions even if you think they’re dumb, if it interests you inquire about it. The fact that you’re asking is showing that you’re in this for the long run and want to grow.
Why should women consider a career in construction? I think women should consider a career in construction for the sense of accomplishment towards your community, it’s a different feeling when you can point at buildings driving around your hometown saying “I helped build that establishment”
