2021 Women in Construction: Sue Bailey, LEED AP Assistant Project Manager, Connolly Brothers
Why should women consider a career in construction? Over the years, I’ve seen more women entering the construction industry. For those who might hesitate, I can tell you that for me the challenges make it extremely rewarding. This is a strong industry with diverse individuals and experiences. Every day, every project, is an opportunity to learn and grow. There’s never a dull moment!
Starting out in the construction business, who or what empowered you?
The people I worked with were very helpful in bringing me along throughout my career. One of my first supervisors promised to challenge me and said I would accomplish things I would have never imagined. I continue to strive for that now, while constantly learning. Knowledge is empowering. I have been lucky join some great companies with exceptional clients. When the project team works well together, tremendous satisfaction comes from a job well done.
What are you most looking forward to post-pandemic? So many things: Meeting with co-workers, travelling, and visiting my grandchildren. Looking forward to collaborating again. I’ve learned how beneficial it is professionally and personally to work closely together, seeing each other’s facial expressions and sharing the same space. To relish the camaraderie here at the Connolly Brothers office and onsite with project teams. I’ll enjoy the day we can move around safely and freely. Most of all, travelling out of state to cuddle my newest grandchild while he’s still a baby and dance with his big brother. I think we’ll all appreciate gathering with extended family and friends like never before.
