Callahan Construction Managers partnering with South Shore Habitat for Humanity
Weymouth, MA Callahan Construction Managers (Callahan) is partnering with South Shore Habitat for Humanity (SSHH) in its effort to provide safe, healthy and affordable housing to families in need on the South Shore of Massachusetts.
As a “SSHH Community Builder,” Callahan’s contribution directly supports the organization’s mission to “build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter.” The community builder program is a yearlong partnership designed to foster collaboration, communication and civic engagement through employee volunteerism.
“We are proud to partner with South Shore Habitat for Humanity to build affordable housing for families in need,” said Patrick Callahan, president of Callahan. “We’ve been volunteering for years with the organization and most recently had a group onsite during Women in Construction week. Our employees appreciate the opportunity to work side-by-side with families and help them realize their dream of home ownership. It is rewarding to know that we can utilize our skills to help improve people’s lives for the better.”
Callahan also supports the work of the SSHH ReStore, where gently used home goods and surplus building materials get a second life. This ensures vast quantities of material are saved from landfills each year, helping to protect the environment. “For more than 32 years, South Shore Habitat for Humanity has been changing lives and improving its communities,” Callahan said. “Through our partnership, we can help to ensure their continued success.”
“We are so grateful for Callahan’s, support,” said Evelyn Nelson, vice president of development for South Shore Habitat for Humanity. “Their employee engagement and financial commitment to our program are just what we need to achieve our mission of providing more affordable housing to families. Since 1986 we have built 58 homes, but we need to build more. Together, with Callahan Construction Managers, we can do just that.”
Alongside local volunteers, families put in “sweat equity hours” to build their home and then purchase the property with a 30-year, affordable mortgage. Homes have a deed restriction that maintains the affordability status of each home in perpetuity. Habitat Family Partners are selected through a competitive underwriting process based on their ability to pay, willingness to partner, and their need for adequate housing.
“South Shore Habitat for Humanity offers a hand-up, not a hand-out,” said Martine Taylor, Executive Director at SSHH. “Habitat does not build these homes; the local communities do. We are so very grateful to all our donors and supporters for their contributions and for making homeownership a reality for these families.”
South Shore Habitat for Humanity is currently building a six-family townhome community in Duxbury, MA, and recently announced that a new home build at 10 Electric Ave. in Easton will commence this summer.
