What was your first position/job in the A/E/C Industry? I was initially hired as an administrative intern. As part of my duties, I started doing some low-level CAD work to support the detailing team. I picked it up quickly and really enjoyed doing it. I was fortunate that my bosses saw potential in me and asked me if I was interested in becoming a detailer. As a detailer, I create 3D drawings that visually communicate how a particular component should be assembled on the shop floor, and how it should be packaged for the field.
Why the A/E/C Industry? Previously, I managed a restaurant, but I decided I wanted something more challenging than food service work. It’s fascinating to help contribute to the complex process of wiring an office building and to see it all come together. I’m happiest when I’m constantly learning and solving problems, so this is perfect for me.
Advice/Keys to Success: Find a company that values and encourages diversity. Be open minded and do research on the different kinds of jobs available. Interning is a great way to get your foot in the door somewhere and then just work hard and learn as much as you can.
If you had to choose one word to explain why you do what you do, which one most suits you? And why? For me, it’s definitely the challenge of learning new things and pushing my boundaries.
