Logan International Airport’s Consolidated Rental Agency Complex (ConRAC)
Boston, MA The $251.2 million Consolidated Rental Agency Complex (ConRAC) at Logan International Airport is the largest Rental Car Center (RCC) in the U.S. to achieve LEED Gold certification. The project lies within a 50-acre site that was previously used for rental car activities, taxi pool operation, bus/limo pool, surface parking, and the Gate Gourmet flight kitchen. It included construction of a 112,000 s/f Customer Service Center building adjoined to a four-level, 1.2 million s/f precast parking garage to consolidate rental car facilities, as well as maintenance and storage areas for rental car operations which provide fueling, car washing and cleaning facilities, and vehicle storage.
The construction of these buildings was a significant undertaking in and of itself, but was only a component of the full project scope which also included a reconfigured taxi pool, roadway and intersection improvements, site access improvements, and landscaping. These improvements have allowed for a new, unified shuttle bus system which has eliminated diesel powered buses entirely from Massport’s fleet. Bus traffic has dropped from 100 buses per hour to 28 fuel efficient clean hybrid buses. As a result, vehicle miles are expected to drop by 70% with an accompanying 35% decline in airport-related emissions, further contributing to Massport’s Agency-Wide Sustainable Initiatives and Policies strategy.
Additional green building highlights of Logan ConRAC include: • 616 solar panels on 22 solar trees produce 227,000 kWh and offset 5% of the buildings’ energy usage while reducing GHG emissions by 93 tons • High-performance water fixtures reduce water use by 38% • More than 75% (76,000 tons) of construction waste was diverted from landfills • Energy efficiency investments exceed the Mass. energy code by 25% and save 740,000 kWh annually.
