Mass. Chapter of ABC Excellence in Construction Awards - Zampell Refractories
Charlestown, MA The Massachusetts Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors congratulates Zampell Refractories, Inc. for receiving the Eagle Award at the 23rd annual Excellence in Construction Awards for their outstanding work on the scaffolding at the U.S.S. Constitution located in Charlestown, Mass.
The Eagle Award recognizes the overall excellence in project execution, craftsmanship, safety, innovative elements and challenges, and client satisfaction. Zampell Refractories took home the Eagle Award, representing the pinnacle of achievement, for its work on the scaffolding at the U.S.S. Constitution. Scaffold materials were expedited to the work site, hoisted by crane into the 30’ dry dock and installed under and around the hull of the ship. The challenge of designing a scaffold solution while the constitution was still afloat in Boston Harbor was overcome by utilizing ship drawings, dry dock sketches and photographs past and present. Without the ability to take hard measurements of the dry dock, hull, and the ship supports, the Zampell design team had to anticipate how the ship would be positioned once water was drained from the dry dock. The final positioning of strong backs and keel supports were critical to the scaffold foundation design.
