Elizabeth Mason, who has more than two decades of private and public sector experience as an environmental transactional/compliance attorney and litigator, has joined Bernkopf Goodman LLP as a partner in the environmental practice group. Mason was formerly counsel at Anderson & Kreiger LLP in Cambridge, and a senior assistant regional counsel in the Boston office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In addition, she was an associate at Goodwin Procter LLP and Mintz Levin, both in Boston, and served as law clerk to chief justice Joseph Warner and the honorable Benjamin Kaplan of the Massachusetts Appeals Court.
Mason's expertise ranges from representing private, commercial and municipal clients in federal, state and local permitting, zoning and enforcement proceedings to guiding developers and property owners through the regulatory and compliance morass involved in the cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated properties.
She has represented numerous clients in federal and state Superfund response actions, litigation and negotiations, and advised corporate and non-profit clients on environmental compliance under federal and state hazardous waste management, water and wetlands regulations.
"We are thrilled to welcome Betsy with her vast experience as a land use and environmental attorney to the firm to bolster our full service real estate practice," Neil Markson, managing partner of Bernkopf Goodman, said. "Her perspective as both a private firm and government attorney handling issues such as the cleanup and redevelopment of complex contaminated sites, will benefit our clients, who include lenders, developers and business owners, as they confront a challenging regulatory landscape."
Mason earned her J.D., cum laude, from Boston College Law School, where she was editor in chief of the Boston College Environmental Affairs Law Review. She graduated from Yale University, magna cum laude with Honors, with a B.A. in American Studies and earned an M.A. in American and New England Studies from Boston University. Mason is a former member of the Conservation Commission for the town of Mendon, Mass.
Currently celebrating its 120th year, Bernkopf Goodman LLP is a full-service Boston boutique law firm specializing in commercial real estate, business transactions and civil litigation.
