Columbia Construction begins Carbonite headquarters project
July 17, 2014 - Construction Design & Engineering
Carbonite, along with project team members JLL, IA Interior Architects, and Columbia Construction, marked the beginning of their new headquarters project by hosting a demolition kick-off event on June 2. Project and executive team members from each company gathered to officially start demolition on the Carbonite interior fit-out in Downtown Crossing. Hammers and hard hats customized for the occasion were the gear of the day as the team assembled to celebrate.
Carbonite's new home will be ready for occupancy in October 2014. The vision for their 50,000 s/f headquarters, the first in the company's history, is to create a comfortable and highly functional office. The industrial chic design strives to bring the comforts of home into the workplace through thoughtful detailing, which includes exposed ceilings, the use of reclaimed metal and wide plank floors. These elements are balanced by sleek glass office fronts and refined finishes. The space was planned so that each department has its own neighborhood center, offering a variety of work settings from small focus rooms and conference rooms to more informal living rooms and multipurpose spaces. Beyond the neighborhoods there are centrally located common areas positioned to support collaboration, including a high end coffee bar and café.
In moving to the Downtown Crossing neighborhood, Carbonite is almost doubling its space. Having added more than 250 employees since 2011, the company is building in capacity in their new office to accommodate continued expansion. "We are committed to remaining in downtown Boston because so many of our employees use public transportation to get to work, and frankly it's a fun place to be. We'll be right in the center of the new Innovation District in Boston which is bustling with tech companies and startups, so it will be a very exciting neighborhood in which to work," said Carbonite's founder and CEO David Friend. "I am very grateful to the inside team that selected the site, coordinated needs across the company, and continue to work alongside a terrific team of advisors, architects and builders on what will soon be a fantastic new Carbonite headquarters."
