Florence Electric nears completion of $25 million 4.1 mw statewide solar installation project
May 25, 2011 - Green Buildings
Florence Electric is currently completing the installation of 4.1 megawatts of solar energy funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, through federal stimulus dollars awarded to Mass. by the U.S. EPA. This $25 million contract is the state's largest award for a solar installation. The municipal and regional water and wastewater treatment facilities where these solar arrays have been installed span the state from Cape Cod to western Mass. and include both ground mounted and roof mounted arrays.
While having nearly 50 electricians working on these installations, Eli Florence, president of Florence Electric, said "This project has employed many local trades people in well-paying construction jobs and has benefitted the local community in terms of employment. Moreover, this project represents a major step in creating several jobs in the green economy and is a win-win not only for the town, but, for the state and country as well." The participating facilities benefit from this solar energy, saving anywhere from $3,000 to $120,000 annually, depending upon the size of the array. In addition, many of these arrays are the first of their kind on town property, and have lent their hand to the potential for additional arrays and taxpayer savings. Cost cutting measures are on the forefront of every town's agenda these days, and Florence Electric is proud to have been able to provide so many with a renewable energy source that is going to save money for years to come.
