Suffolk Construction and Steffian Bradley begin $34 million Mattapan Community Health Center

When the Mattapan Community Health Center (MCHC) opens its new $34 million facility next year, it will include two high profile tenants, CVS Pharmacy - the first pharmacy in Mattapan Sq. in 30 years - and Citizens Bank. The new facility - the first new building of its size to be constructed in Mattapan Sq. in more than half a century - will create 200 construction and new permanent jobs, thus boosting the local economy.
With the completion of these commercial leasing agreements and environmental abatement of the eight parcelson the site at 1575 Blue Hill Ave., demolition and construction has begun. Dr. Azzie Young, MCHC president and CEO, said, "The addition of CVS Pharmacy and Citizens Bank to our new building brings badly needed jobs and services to our neighborhood. We applaud their commitment." MCHC is already Mattapan's largest employer.
Mattapan Community Health Center's current facility is aging, worn and undersized, and in need of replacement. The new 50,000 s/f building is designed to achieve LEED-silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. It will feature the use of recycled and regional building materials, energy efficient HVAC and lighting systems, and a green roof.
Steffian Bradley Architects designed the building in collaboration with the MCHC team. Suffolk Construction Company is the designated builder. Janey Construction Management & Consulting Inc., provides the clerk of the works services.
Despite the recession, some $30 million toward the goal of $34 million has been raised so far. Funding for the project is coming from five key sources: American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), EPA through the City of Boston (BRA), New Markets Tax Credit Equity, loans and philanthropic support. In addition, the Kresge Foundation has awarded MCHC a $500,000 Challenge Grant which requires the health center to complete its fundraising campaign for $12 million by December 31, 2011.
