Poinelli of SMMA named to College of Fellows by AIA

Philip Poinelli, FAIA, a principal with design firm SMMA, was named to the College of Fellows by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2012 Jury of Fellows. Elevation to Fellowship is an honor awarded to AIA members who have made significant contributions to the architecture profession and society on a national level. Poinelli's professional and community contributions span four decades in architecture, specifically centered on innovative planning and design excellence in K-12 education environments. He is vice president of the Northeast Region of the Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI), and co-chair of the AIA's national K-12 Education Subcommittee. A longtime member of the Boston Society of Architects (BSA), Poinelli served in multiple volunteer roles, including as a 20 year-member of the BSA's Educational Facilities Committee. "I've had the pleasure of working with Phil for 20 years, so I am not surprised that he earned this noteworthy distinction among his architectural peers," said Ara Krafian, PE, CEO and President of SMMA. "We are thrilled with Phil's recognition as Fellow. We celebrate this achievement with clients and colleagues who value his character, expertise and career-long contributions. We feel privileged to have Phil's passion for excellence at the firm." Poinelli is a Lecturer on educational programming and planning at the Boston Architectural College. He has served as a volunteer leader for the Town of Lexington, MA, advising the town on capital projects including the completion of twelve projects including seven school facilities. In addition to his AIA Fellowship (FAIA) honors, he is a Recognized Educational Facility Planner (REFP) by Council of Educational Facility Planners International, and a LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) by the United States Green Building Council. He is a frequent speaker and author on the topic of educational planning and design, having authored several journal articles and presented research topics at international, national and regional education conferences.
