Parsons receives TCI's Pride in Construction Project of the Year Award

The Construction Institute (TCI) awarded its 2009 Pride in Construction Project of the Year honor to Parsons for its completion of the Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) cell culture facility in Devens. The project consists of six structures with flagship buildings used for offices and quality control labs totaling 72,000 s/f. The manufacturing plant is 190,000 s/f. TCI's Pride in Construction Project of the Year Award program recognizes projects that have been constructed in Massachusetts using union contractors and workers that have had a positive impact on the construction industry, the community, and industry clients. The BMS facility began construction in February 2007 and is BMS's largest single capital project at a cost of $750 million. Skanska, over 100 subcontractors, and nearly 3,000 skilled crafts men and women also contributed to the success of the BMS project. The project was completed on time and on budget as a result of being built under a Project Labor Agreement. The BMS project has established new benchmarks within the pharma and construction industry. One of the most noteworthy is that LEED Certification is being sought for the lab/office building (gold) and the manufacturing facility (silver). Additionally, the project totaled more than 2.6 million man-hours with a recordable injury rate below the industry average. Several months prior to completion of the project, OSHA bestowed its highest safety award - Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) to the project formally recognizing the significance of creating and maintaining a safe work environment.

State legislature ends session without passing PLA bill - by Joe Camilo

Massachusetts taxpayers dodged a bullet when the state Senate didn’t take up legislation passed by the House in the waning moments of the legislative session that would have made it easier for municipalities and state agencies to use union-only project labor agreements (PLAs) on construction projects.

Ask the Electrician: How do I prepare my commercial building for a disaster?

New England’s notorious weather – from fierce winter storms to summer squalls and fall hurricanes – can leave businesses in the dark. While power outages are often blamed on storms, they can also be caused by unforeseen events like accidents or construction mishaps. While it’s impossible to prevent disasters and power outages entirely, proactive preparation can significantly minimize their impact on your commercial building.
