MDS designing phase II renovation of 12,500 s/f at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's new Harbor Campus
MDS is designing the 12,500 s/f Phase II renovation of the first floor of 27 Dry Dock Ave., Marine Industrial Park in for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's (DFCI) new Harbor Campus.
The Phase II renovation will be named the Nancy Lurie Marks Imaging Center, located within the newly formed DFCI Center for Biomedical Imaging in Oncology (CBIO).
In December 2006, MDS completed Phase I, a 21,000 s/f renovation of the fourth floor of 27 Dry Dock Ave. Fifty-five staff members from the departments of materials control (receiving and general stores inventory), health information services, and cancer registry moved into the space.
The Phase II Imaging Center will apply advanced imaging techniques to study promising new compounds for the treatment of cancer. The Center features several different scanners, such as PET, CT, SPECT and MRI.
According to Myron Miller, AIA, principal, "With 13' to 16' floor-to-ceiling heights and wide and open floor plates and "warehouse ambiance", it was rewarding to program and design the space for the various Dana-Farber departments since advanced and important research will be conducted for the treatment of cancer."
Miller added, "Dana-Farber's move to the Seaport District is a cost-efficient solution for much needed off-campus space, given the high cost of real estate in Longwood area."
Built in the 1930s by the federal government to receive military draftees, the building offers spectacular views of the Boston Harbor, skyline and Logan Airport. Dana-Farber's Harbor Campus is adjacent to Dry Dock No. 3, the largest ship-repair dry dock on the East Coast, Black Falcon Cruise Ship Terminal, and the Boston Design Center.
Harbor Campus was discovered by Dana-Farber quite by accident. Officials of the Boston Redevelopment Authority, owners of 27 Dry Dock Ave., recommended that Dana-Farber look at the space. Rick Shea, vice president for Facilities Management at DFCI, said he and his colleagues were immediately "sold" upon seeing the space.
