Kuhn joins CBT as principal

Richard Kuhn

Boston, MA CBT, an award-winning, internationally recognized design firm, has hired a new principal, Richard (Rick) Kuhn, AIA. Kuhn brings to the firm more than three decades of design experience, which spans a broad range of building typologies across sectors including the higher education, life science, cultural, civic and commercial office markets.

As CBT’s newest principal, Kuhn will expand CBT’s design reach and build upon their already-rich client base across their many areas of practice. His passion for and understanding of building design as an evolving holistic process will continue to drive his commitment to creating beautiful and inspired spaces that have a transformative effect on the communities in which he works. He brings the firm great value as a sought-after design mentor who will work to elevate the design culture among CBT’s professional team.

“Rick’s creative perspective, distinctive and award-winning work and vast industry knowledge of all of CBT’s key business sectors will bring tremendous value to our clients and internal project teams,” said David Nagahiro, principal and president at CBT. “His singular dedication to design excellence will strengthen CBT’s longstanding design culture of building exemplary projects around the world. We are elated to have him on board.”

Prior to joining CBT, Kuhn served as a principal and the design director for Perkins + Will where he oversaw the design of numerous major projects ranging from public libraries and university campus centers to residence halls and medical centers. Before that, he was a design principal and lead designer with the multi-award-winning firm The Freelon Group (who joined Perkins + Will in 2014). Throughout his career, Kuhn has also lent his talents to firms around the country, working on projects across all building typologies both nationally and internationally including in the Middle East and Asia, focusing in the last decade on helping his clients achieve design excellence in the higher education, cultural and civic sectors.

“Architecture is an illustrious, inspired art form which is continually evolving, shaped by new technology, interdisciplinary partnerships and social necessity. CBT has long served as a powerhouse design firm in Boston, paving the way for new innovations and creative solutions to meet the needs of its diverse clientele,” said Kuhn. “Strong, effective collaboration is the key to success in any good design, and I look forward to working alongside CBT’s talented teams to deliver future engaging projects in Greater Boston and beyond.”

Throughout his career, Kuhn’s work has been published extensively and received more than 50 AIA design awards in recognition of his ability to create and inspire thoughtful, innovative and sustainable design solutions for his clients. He earned his bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Florida, and his master’s in architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Kuhn is a licensed architect in multiple states, is N.C.A.R.B certified and is a member of the Boston Society of Architects.
