Woburn, MA If residents in the Henshaw St. area have noticed a delightful new aroma, it is likely coming from Freedom Bakery, LLC. The specialty baking company recently moved its wholesale commissary to a 6,640 s/f facility in a building managed by Cummings Properties.

Certified kosher, Freedom’s products are free of gluten, dairy, soy, peanuts, and tree nuts. Freedom’s aim is to provide an allergy-friendly treat whose flavor, form, and consistency mirror those of a regular baked good. This intention is echoed in the company’s tagline: “We are not just good for gluten free; we are good PERIOD.”

The bakery’s new space at 4-G Henshaw St. serves as its first dedicated production facility.

“As a growing company, we like that this facility is large enough to support our continued development,” said Freedom president Steve Weinstein. “Whereas we used to make 200 doughnuts an hour, we’re now equipped to fill much larger orders, making 6,000 doughnuts in that same time frame.”

“Convenient access to major highways also made for a very attractive match in this case,” said Cummings Properties leasing director Mike Truesdale, who worked directly with Weinstein on the lease. “Freedom’s distributor can use neighboring I-93 and I-95 to easily transport product deliveries.”

Freedom joins a number of food-related businesses with commissaries or corporate offices in town, including Ninety Nine Restaurants, Boston Restaurant Associates (operator of Polcari’s and Pizzeria Regina), Skewer’s Wood Grill, and Martin’s Famous Pastry Shoppe.

Freedom received Progressive Grocer’s 2019 Editors’ Pick award for best new product. Its certified gluten-free doughnut minis are available in four flavors: devil’s food chocolate, old fashioned glazed, apple cider, and pumpkin. They are currently available for purchase on Amazon and have been picked up by 360 stores in 26 states nationwide, including many local supermarkets and retail shops.

Cummings Properties manages a portfolio of 10 million s/f of commercial space in 11 suburban communities north and west of Boston. Most of these properties are owned by Cummings Foundation, with 100% of all rental profits supporting hundreds of local charities. The Cummings organization has already awarded more than $25 million to greater Boston nonprofits in 2019, and it has awarded more than $260 million to date.

Ask the Electrician: How do I prepare my commercial building for a disaster?

New England’s notorious weather – from fierce winter storms to summer squalls and fall hurricanes – can leave businesses in the dark. While power outages are often blamed on storms, they can also be caused by unforeseen events like accidents or construction mishaps. While it’s impossible to prevent disasters and power outages entirely, proactive preparation can significantly minimize their impact on your commercial building.

Investing in a falling rate environment - by Harrison Klein

Long-term interest rates have fallen by 100 basis points, and the market is normalizing. In December of 2022 I wrote an article about investing in a high interest rate, high inflation market. Since then, inflation has cooled off, and the Fed has begun lowering their funds rate.

The industrial markets have never been stronger. What has happened is that the build out of Devens with new high-tech biotech manufacturing with housing to service these buildings serves as the connector required to really make the I-495 West market sizzle. Worcester has been the beneficiary
