Erland Construction recognized for Excellence in Construction

Burlington, MA Erland Construction is proud to have been among the recipients of the 31st annual Excellence in Construction Awards given by ABC MA. Erland was recognized with an Eagle Award, representing the pinnacle of achievements, for its outstanding work on the Patterson-Sculley House (Residence Life Project) at St. Mark’s School. The award recognizes the overall excellence in project execution, craftsmanship, safety, innovative elements and challenges, and client satisfaction.

Erland teamed with Goody Clancy and Design Technique, Inc. to complete the new 90,000 s/f, three-story all-electric residence hall, which houses a mix of single and double rooms for 150 students and 12 faculty apartments, a student lounge, eight group study rooms, 12 study nooks, and a “classroom-in-the-sky.” The building was designed to incorporate sustainable elements and constructed to meet St. Mark’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship. The residence hall creates a living and learning community that fosters the extraordinary relationship between the school’s students and faculty and honors the “school under one roof” vision of St. Mark’s founder, Joseph Burnett. The building even features a common kitchen that has been sized and equipped so that a larger group can use it to prepare a meal together.

“We’re proud of what we’ve built for St. Mark’s and its students,” said Ben McConchie, Academic Group Manager, Erland Construction. “Partnering with the school, Goody Clancy, Design Technique, Inc., and each of our dedicated subcontractors was a truly rewarding experience that led to an incredibly successful project. We are honored to have our efforts commended by ABC MA and been part of such a strong team effort.”

This year, over 250 ABC members gathered at the Four Points by Sheraton Norwood to recognize and celebrate the very best construction projects their companies have to offer. The 2023 applicant pool was particularly competitive, with each winner selected for the high standards of craftsmanship, safety, and quality delivered by talented merit shop workers using the efficient merit shop approach.

“We are proud to recognize the outstanding work of our member contractors through the ABC Excellence in Construction Awards. The winning contractors maintained a constant focus on meeting their client’s needs and set a high bar for craftsmanship, quality, and safety,” said Chapter President Greg Beeman.

Erland senior superintendent Ken Tessitore was also recognized at the ceremony for his involvement with the Gould Construction Institute. He was presented with the Paul McDonald Distinguished Teacher Award for his innovative teaching methods, dedication to fostering inclusive classrooms, and relentless pursuit of helping students carefully develop their craft.

New England’s notorious weather – from fierce winter storms to summer squalls and fall hurricanes – can leave businesses in the dark. While power outages are often blamed on storms, they can also be caused by unforeseen events like accidents or construction mishaps. While it’s impossible to prevent disasters and power outages entirely, proactive preparation can significantly minimize their impact on your commercial building.

State legislature ends session without passing PLA bill - by Joe Camilo

Massachusetts taxpayers dodged a bullet when the state Senate didn’t take up legislation passed by the House in the waning moments of the legislative session that would have made it easier for municipalities and state agencies to use union-only project labor agreements (PLAs) on construction projects.
