Dave Cannistraro - President's message: Summing up construction in 2011

Construction had a very different look and feel in 2011. Though we have all seen the negative impact of recent changes in the construction industry I can't help but notice a positive change as well - the resolve of members of the subcontracting community. We have experienced the decline of new construction projects, layoffs throughout the industry and decreasing revenue - but through it all our industry has come together and become stronger. As an organization, ASM has also become stronger and more connected to its members. We have seen an increase in attendance at educational seminars and safety workshops by subcontractors as well as increased interest in outside resources provided exclusively to our members. ASM offered members a rare opportunity to celebrate their achievements at the ASM Biennial Dinner Meeting held in the new Art of the Americas wing at the Museum of Fine Arts this spring. The new wing was constructed by subcontractors - most of whom are ASM members. I took great pride in our organization that evening and I have no doubt that subcontractors and our members will continue to pave the way in this new (construction) world as we emerge from one of the worst hits the industry has taken in years. As an organization we saw considerable advances in technology including social media's place in the construction industry and increased demand for mobile communications. ASM is committed to supporting its members and keeping them connected and engaged in the conversation. Wewill continue to remain on the front lines of new and emerging tools that help our members conduct their business faster, smarter and more cost effectively. Looking ahead, ASM will continue to monitor and respond to changes and challenges that best serve the interests of our members and subcontractors across the Commonwealth. We are committed to professionally serving our members and the industry and welcome your input and ideas. It is through the combined efforts of our board, members and staff that we can provide the best and only support for subcontractors in the state. Dave Cannistraro is the president of the Associated Subcontractors of Mass., Boston and is the president of J.C. Cannistraro LLC, Watertown, Mass.

When it comes to corporate interior spaces for both commercial and industrial projects, partnering with a design-build firm with in-house interior design services can offer clients many benefits. Careers in Construction Month focus on training and safety - by Joe Camilo

October is Careers in Construction Month, and rarely has it been more consequential.
